Buying Event Tickets Abroad — What Changes

A ticket in London, Tokyo or São Paulo is not just a translated version of a ticket at home.

Cali Tickets is an independent resale marketplace. We are not a venue, not a primary seller, and not affiliated with any venue, team, performer or promoter named on this site. Prices are set by sellers and may be above or below face value. Venue and event names are used for descriptive purposes only.

Buying for an event in another country is mostly the same transaction with four differences worth knowing before you commit, especially if flights are already booked.

1. Currency and card charges

Listings may be presented in your currency while the underlying transaction settles in another. Your card issuer may add a foreign transaction fee, typically a small percentage, which will not appear in the checkout total because it is not ours to charge.

Where you are offered a choice between paying in your own currency or the local one, the local currency is almost always cheaper — the convenience conversion is priced in the merchant's favour.

2. Delivery gets more conservative

International events lean harder on release-close-to-event windows and, in some markets, on collection at the venue. Build that into your travel: if collection is required, you need to know where the collection point is and when it opens before you are standing outside a stadium in a city you do not know.

3. Identification requirements are more common

Several European football competitions, some Japanese events and a number of festivals require the ticket to carry the attendee's name, or require photo ID matching the purchaser. This is unusual in North America and normal elsewhere. Where it applies to an event, the listing says so — read it, because it is the one restriction that cannot be worked around at the gate.

4. Venue rules differ more than you expect

  • Bag policies. Many European stadiums are close to bag-free.
  • Cashless. Widespread across UK and European venues. Bring a card that works abroad.
  • Alcohol in view of the pitch is restricted at some football grounds.
  • Standing areas. Safe-standing is legal in parts of Europe and the ticket will say so. If you want to sit, do not buy in a supporters' section.
  • Kick-off and curfew times move. Broadcast schedules shift fixtures, sometimes by a day. Book flexible travel around a football fixture.

A practical sequence

  1. Buy the ticket before non-refundable travel where you can.
  2. Read the listing note for ID and collection requirements.
  3. Read our venue page for the building — transit, bag policy, how long it takes to get out.
  4. Screenshot your order confirmation. Roaming data at a stadium is not a plan.
  5. Save (877) 225-8425 in your phone before you fly.

We cover venues in 20 countries, and each venue page carries the local practicalities rather than generic advice.

About this guide

Written and maintained by the Cali Tickets ticketing team — the same people who answer (877) 225-8425. Published 20 August 2026 and reviewed August 2026. Our guidance comes from order history, buyer support calls and time spent in these buildings, not from reprinting seat charts. Where we are uncertain we say so. See our editorial standards.
