Ticket Fees Explained — What You Are Actually Paying For

A $90 ticket that becomes $137 at checkout is not a $90 ticket. Here is what each line item is.

Cali Tickets is an independent resale marketplace. We are not a venue, not a primary seller, and not affiliated with any venue, team, performer or promoter named on this site. Prices are set by sellers and may be above or below face value. Venue and event names are used for descriptive purposes only.

Ticket fees have a bad reputation, most of it deserved — not because fees exist, but because of when they appear. A fee disclosed up front is a price. A fee revealed after you have entered your card details is a tactic.

The line items

Ticket price

Set by the seller, not the marketplace. This is the number that moves with demand and it is the bulk of what you pay.

Service fee

The marketplace's charge. It covers transaction processing, fraud screening, the guarantee that refunds you when something fails, and staffed support. It is a real cost of running a market where strangers exchange something valuable and time-sensitive.

Delivery fee

Varies by method. Mobile transfer and instant download are cheapest. Tracked physical delivery costs more because it is a courier.

Taxes

Set by the jurisdiction of the event, not where you live.

Why "no fees" marketing is usually a rearrangement

A marketplace advertising no fees has generally moved the fee into the ticket price — the industry calls it all-in pricing. That is genuinely better for comparison shopping, because the number you see is the number you pay. What it is not is cheaper. Anyone claiming to have removed the cost rather than relocated it is describing a business model that does not exist.

The thing worth insisting on is not the absence of fees. It is disclosure before payment. That is our commitment: the total is shown before you enter card details.

Comparing marketplaces without fooling yourself

  1. Take both listings to the point immediately before payment details.
  2. Compare the totals there.
  3. Confirm both are the same section and row. A cheaper total in a worse section is not a saving.
  4. Check the delivery method matches — instant download versus release-at-venue matters if you are travelling.

Do that and the comparison is honest. Compare headline prices and you are comparing marketing.

The question worth asking instead

Not "which site has the lowest fee" but "what happens if this goes wrong". A low fee on a marketplace that stops answering the phone when a transfer fails is the most expensive ticket you will ever buy. Our guarantee page sets out exactly what we cover, and (877) 225-8425 reaches a person.

About this guide

Written and maintained by the Cali Tickets ticketing team — the same people who answer (877) 225-8425. Published 11 August 2026 and reviewed August 2026. Our guidance comes from order history, buyer support calls and time spent in these buildings, not from reprinting seat charts. Where we are uncertain we say so. See our editorial standards.
